There are many people whose lives drastically change upon recieving the prognosis of a terminal illness. Much like its effect on the body, the disease begins to take over, dictating every aspect of life. The drastic changes include slowing down, shutting down, retreating, taking time for ones self and or family. However, Chadwick Boseman rejected that.
Upon the news of his death, I battled between devastation and awe. My awe won as I meditated on his silent battle, gracious spirit, and boldness with which he lived the life of someone young, gifted, black and in pain. Diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer at the tender age of 39, Chadwick didn’t just keep going, he went further in giving himself to his craft and fans.
It is amazing, honestly. Humbling, in fact. The kind of strength you have to call on to go through chemotherapy, surgeries, daily changes, struggles, and then show up with the fullness his coworkers describe of him is breathtaking. I think of how difficult it must have been for those who loved him intimately to go through this journey with him. Watching him push himself, supporting his desire to leave this phase of life empty.
Chadwick Boseman is the first person I can point to who really gave me a visual of what it is like to leave life with nothing left. The concept of giving all of yourself to the world in the face of death leaves me speechless. What is appropriate to even say for that? Thank you.
Thank you sir for daring to live fully when no one would have judged you for sitting down. Thank you for never giving up on your dream and transforming with it as it grew. Thank you for humbleness in the midst of excellence. Thank you for not leaving being a king to just on screen.
As you transition to ancestor may it be with boldness.
